<<Just one question: Does the A&H help prevent fading or just set the dye to prevent bleeding?
Okay, *two* questions: Washing soda? Is it like borax?
Coise>>
Well, I don't really have two answers...My Granny (who is going to be 82 and has been to her first two events in her life this year) has always used washing soda, to, as she says, "Keep the color".
I'm thinking this means "set it." Salt will set your color too, as will vinegar (see Alban's answers). It brightens things up too...
The washing soda also works to brighten laundry in general, particularly whites/brights you don't want to wash on hot, but need a little kick in the pants. I use it with color-safe liquid bleach and liquid detergent (all Arm & Hammer brand) on cold.
It also really does some great stuff for "trashed white" 100% cotton underdresses. Some bleach, some hot water, some detergent, some washing soda, and boy, they about look new. It gets all kinds of stuff out. Gambesons-- woo, doggies, does it get the crud and stinkiness out of gambesons!
I would compare ingredients if possible before buying. Historically, in my family, we've used Dreft washing soda until they stopped making it, and we then switched to Arm & Hammer. I don't know if 20 Mule Team or plain borax is the same. Best advice to read the labels.
