I once attended (as an observer) an Civil War battle at the Ohio Village.
During the skirmish a loaf of bread had been dropped on the ground. As some
soldiers marched by/over it, one of them grabbed it and took a large bite
before the other soldiers started to snatch pieces too. The young people
standing in front responded with a loud chorus of "eewww!" I quietly moved
down the line before I burst with laughter, because I had seen the look in
the soldiers' eyes before they did this to show how valuable food was.
