I've heard this, but I don't believe it.

The reason I don't is that European rail and American rail are different
and, not that long ago, there were four or five competing rail gauges used
here in the states. A friend who is an avid war gamer once showed me a map
that showed all the Civil War era rail lines and color coded them for gauge
(and said, "can you imagine the really convoluted supply rules you could
create...."). It looked like a plate of surrealist spaghetti.

I suspect that about 90% of those, did you know the reason we do such and
such dates back to the Middle Ages where they.... were made up by bored
internet users or the Victorians.
