Breac, this was a great post. With your permission I would like to copy it
and send it on to some people I feel should read it.

Now here are my own thoughts. As usual, I am only trying to express my own
feelings- I am not trying to dictate anything to anybody.
In the three years before I returned to the SCA, I had spent alot of my
spare time wrapped up in reading about the 100 Years War. My brain was
filled up with tales of Sir Walter Manny, the Captal de Buch, Sir John
Chandos and the Black Prince. I was like a tick about to pop. That was the
world I was looking for when I came back. I would look at a field full of
fighters and the only person I would see would be the person who looked the
most 14th century. It was kind of selfish really- I didn't see anyone else.
But then I got to thinking, what's the difference where somebody finds
inspiration? If they get it from Tolkien- fine. If they get it from
Braveheart- fine. Highlander- okay. Malory- sure. Nobody can dictate or
predict what is going to inspire a person to create great Art, fight well,
doggedly serve the Crown, be good at running large events. If Tolkien gives
them endless inner emotional inspiration to keep adding to our Game- that's
fine with me. I don't care if they prefer the Olivier version of Henry V to
the Kenneth Branaugh version.
I guess I am forever stuck in Froissart- but now I only look for inspired
people. Where they get the inspiration from doesn't matter to me any more.
(As long as they show up for Border Raids, Blackstone Raids, Gulf Wars and
Pennsic- I'm happy. ;) )
