I have been a fan from afar of the concept of Upton Paggles...is it at
all typical of anything in the SCA?

What's missing from the "village" concept is the physical location.
People actually live and work in a village. Except for the major wars,
the "villageness" of the SCA is almost completely off stage; a lot of
neat work is done, but mostly not on site. Mostly the SCA is where the
*results* of such work are *shown off.*

As for the major wars, set-up and tearing down (groan! the Spirit of
Sump Holes Past comes to haunt me!) and food preparation apart, there is
certainly a lot less work done there than in any real village or city.
If we all did our laundry there, we'd be in big trouble.

Maybe a better comparison for Pennsic or Gulf Wars or whatever is a
gathering at the site of a major tournament in the Middle Ages (thanks
to Duke Merowald for the idea, years ago): it's temporary, few people
make their living there, it's not daily life but a big celebration.
Most people there don't fight but the arrangement to fight at specific
place and time is why the event takes place where and when it does. And
then the party begins...
