OK, so having had an unexpected day off today (my boss e-mailed me several
days ago and said that he had me scheduled off today, even though I swore
before I went on Christmas vacation that I was scheduled in today, but hey,
never look a gift horse in the mouth!), I took advantage of the opportunity
to catch a matineé of LoTR.

Well, my verdict is, it was good. Not the kind of movie I'd race back to see
over and over again, but then, I was seeing the story cold, having never
read Tolkien. I found myself understanding a lot of the Tolkien-esque
influences on the SCA back in the early days.

The scenery was pretty breathtaking. I understand it was shot in some of the
more scenic parts of New Zealand.

Even though I'd anxiously awaited the chance to see this film (mainly based
on the teaser previews they play at the beginning of every movie), I wasn't
totally bowled over by it, but still, it was a nice bit of sword and sorcery
fantasy, if you like that sort of thing.

But I did get the strong impression that the movie was made for those who
already pretty much had read the books over and over again and knew them
backwards and forwards. I really felt like I must be missing something by
not having read the books. I had a feeling it would be that way. So often,
movies made from books assume you've read 'em. Wish they wouldn't do that.

Still, not a bad movie. I'd give it about a B+.
