Camp followers maybe were *supposed* to work hard, but did they? :-)
A traditional reason for joining the army, in whatever capacity, is that
it is one heck of a lot less work than agriculture (if more dangerous).
And I was at Pennsic in those "military camp for a weekend" days...it's
much nicer now.
