I'd say that that's fair. Society rules say that you must make
an attempt at pre-17th century dress in order to attend an event,
but beyond that minimum, it's a range.

It all depends on where you are (what group) and who you ask.

There are some people who (more or less privately) look down
on those of us who haven't gotten around to hand-sewing our period
underwear yet, but they're mostly harmless. They tend to care
passionately about doing things "right" historically, and they're
great sources for how to do things, because they've spent the
time and energy to learn it right. That's one extreme.

If you're constantly wearing blue jeans and a T-tunic and wandering
around with a Budweiser can in your hand at events, yeah, at
least some people in most places will look at you differently
-- because you're not trying very hard. If you make a reasonable
attempt at authenticity, most people will be quite welcoming.

So, what I'm saying is, don't worry about it overmuch. Make
a reasonable good-faith effort, and you'll be OK.

Hmmmm. OK, let's see, off the top of my head, I know people who
do or have done armoring, blacksmithing, brewing, calligraphy,
candlemaking, coining, cooking, costuming, crossbow-making, dancing,
embroidery, foolery, glass-blowing, horn carving, illumination,
jewelry-making, juggling, knife-making, leatherworking, metal
casting of all sorts, making and/or playing period musical instruments,
making period optics and other instruments, performing period
theater, riding, singing, spinning, tumbling, vintning, weaving,
woodworking, ... you get the picture. If they did it, we probably
have somebody who does it.

As for archery, it's not really under A&S -- it's considered
a martial activity. If you have web access, look at the Midrealm
site (www.midrealm.org), click on the marshal's badge (two crossed
swords) and follow the links to the Archery Marshal information.
All the information you could need should be there.

I hope that this helps.
