And to point out you don't have to have the correctly hand stitched period
garment to make it to the top. Many at all levels have taken the 'mundane'
and turned it into clothing and gear that is wonderful, and incredibly
inexpensive, or even free! Hmm making carpet armor comes to mind...
cruising the streets for that 'just-right' roll of carpet some one has
ripped out... oh look at that box... a little paint and some illumination,
it could carry feast gear! Oh.. look at that plate and goblet at the
salvation army store... oooh.. that blanket that is being tossed or those
curtains would make a great cloak... Yard saleing takes on a whole new
dimension once you gain an eye and have an idea what you are looking for.
(This is part of the "Creative Anachronism" ...)
Then once picking some thing you yourself want to make you learn many levels
of it the more you know the more you find out about to learn!
Take for example making an arrow... Pretty simple really, pick the shaft
(once you know the weight of the bow and your draw length) glue on some
feathers, and the nock and the point... then you find out how to do self
nocks, the reinforced knocks, then maybe bone nocks, then off to making hide
glue to glue on the fletching and the right thread to whip on the feathers
with... then you might learn how to blend pigments with the right binder to
make the stuff you want to paint on the shaft to preserve them and make them
even more authentic, who knows, maybe growing your own reeds to make arrows
from and forging the heads your self...
You will rise to the level you are comfortable with and it remains fun!
