This reminds me that I promised Saradwen that I'd let out my cheap fabric
resources!
First of all, I haunt the tumble table in the back near the cheap upholstery
at Jo-Ann's. Some are better than others. I got some great black twill, which
I immediately whipped up into a surcoate--only $2.97 a yard, 60 inch wide
fabric. You have to look often, though, and be prepared to buy when you see
it. In the Akron, Ohio area, the best one seems to be the at the corporate
headquarters store in Hudson, followed by the store in Montrose, near
Wal-Mart...
Speaking of Wal-Mart...the same rules apply. Check the $1/yd.-$2 yd. tables
frequently, but don't forget that bitty little upholstery section some stores
have. I got sueded navy twill last week in the upholstery area; 60 inches
wide, $2/yd. I swear. And I've picked up great cottons and cotton linen
blends on the $1/yd. table.
My true-blue online source is fabrics.com. They're actually looking toward
the SCA and other historical groups as a market, so shop there and shop
often. If you register for the mailing list, you get updates on what's new
two or three times a week. There's a $1/yd section, but it's thin sometimes.
You can get nice linen on clearance for $4 yd. or so...it's usually pretty
wide. And they have trim, hard-to-find notions and machine embroidery
supplies. If you tell them I sent you, they'll keep count. I'm their
SCA-representative-head person, and I wrote them about the SCA when they
asked about their customer's special interests and needs. We correspond
occasionally, and I keep them up to date on when big events are happening in
our region. They've noted that sales go up about 6 weeks before coronations
and stuff....wonder why??? :-)
Bargain fabric hunting is like stalking any other prey--look often, and look
hard. And be prepared to be flexible. You can dye that beige linen or cotton,
you know...
It doesn't have to be horribly expensive to start out in the SCA. As with
anything, buy the best quality you can, and it'll last you some time.
Now, how many of you have been out to shop for camping equipment? This is the
time, you know! And all the chi-chi camping websites have stuff on super-sale
now.
