On top of armour makes more sense than a lot of other possible prepositions.
I usually get a piece of cardboard slightly bigger than the scroll, set the

scroll on top of it and then tape the cardboard to the roof of the car (on
the INSIDE!!!) I've yet to set one anything on top on one (or spill soda on
it, or anything else) when carrying it in such a manner.
