I think that everyone should _strive_ for absolute authenticity. But they
should pair that with the facts that, A) Even with all the time in the
world, and a big whopping pile of money, absolute authenticity is impossible
in most cases. and B) They probably don't have all the time in the world and
a big whopping pile of money.

Sure, someday you might want to make tools and track down materials just
like a medieval craftsman would use to make a thing that is "would fool an
archeologist with a scanning electron microscope" authentic, but for
starters you should shoot for, "looks mostly like the real thing from a
couple feet away". If your first garb is a T-tunic, in a color that they
could have conceivably had in period, with no zipper, declare yourself a
winner!

You should work on assembling a minimum kit first (which I would argue
consists of a change or two of garb and some feast gear) and acquiring
things like a period pavilion with oak furniture later (if you ever want to
bother).

Worry more about what people are going to see (read: what you want to show
off) and less about the stuff you can hide. For example, my body armor is
made of plastic scales, but I hide it under very nice angelwing surcoat
(there's a picture at http://home.i1.net/~avery/sca/sca.html - I'm the one
in red, yellow and black). For armour, for example, the one thing you can't
hide is your helmet.

Good Luck,
Avery
