Japanese Heian period ladies wore multiple layers (I want to say between 8
and 12) and the idea was for them to look enveloped in the cloth. The
slightly later Japanese period of Kamakura was one dedicated against
copious consumption. Slightly earlier than the Heian period was the Nara
period of Japan, which was heavily influenced by the Chinese. It is a
beautiful style and Kass McGann (Lady Fujiwara) , of the East Kingdom is
really the expert on this period. Her website,
http://www.reconstructinghistory.com has much more on this period, and some
others. She also has a survey of Heian period dyestuffs as a section on
the website. Her research is impeccable.

Smiles,
Despina
