It's kind of interesting in the talk of all the required phrases or things to do in a telemarketing job.  The companies might want to be a little wary about them.  A friend of mine works down the street at Jewel Osco where they have been required to say, "Hello, did you find everything okay?  How are you? and Have a nice day."  Well it back fired.  Why because they were literally forced to say exactly those things, that way.  They couldn't say it naturally as it came to them or say anything else in the way of small talk.  They had to say those items.  I don't think the do anymore, at least not at that store as about a hundred or more of their customers complained because it sounded to forced, they do not want forced small talk out of the cashiers, they do not want forced small talk out of the cashiers, they don't want forced smiles out of the cashiers.  In fact if the cashier is having a bad day, they'd rather no about it and hear them complain, because this forced business to them means one thing, your people and obviously your store is phony.  We'll take our business where real people work and live thank you very much.

This doesn't even begin to include the number of people who marched up to the customer service counter to give the usual rebuttle, "Did I find everything alright? Well of course I did or I wouldn't be up here laying things out on the counter and pulling out my wallet if I hadn't found everything now would I."  Or the gentleman who stood at the doors after being told to have a nice day and did the whole George Carlin skit.... "Have a nice day?  Maybe I don't WANT to have a nice day. Maybe I'd like to have mediocre day today, or even a poor one.  But no! Now you've TOLD me to have a nice day and I have to go out and have one now."

Needless to say the management at Jewel were surprized and I don't think they force their cashiers to say all those things now.

  Too bad I'm not a sociologist... it'd made a great study. :)
