I'd normally never suggest something without the ability to volunteer for it
"History for SCA Dummies - What you need to know to get by in the SCA
myself, but in this case, I'm going to suggest a class that could be taught
anywhere, and I'd sure love to take it.
without embarrassing yourself."
I spent my time in school studying science, and after graduation, I joined
the SCA in hopes of picking up some history lessons in my spare time. I've
picked up some, but I sometimes still feel like I'm just nodding along at
the history oriented conversations around me in the SCA (think of Joey on
"Friends"). There's a thousand years of politics and wars that's fair game
at the SCA dinner table, and there's no way I'm going to be able to read up
on all of that plus get all my sewing done.
So, is there a history teacher or group of teachers out there who can help a
well-meaning science major with a full plate of volunteer activities? Can a
thousand years be broken down into manageable chunks? Is there room at RUM
for non-expert level classes? Is there a kind soul out there who can help
me see the big picture without just saying "Read these twenty books and call
me in the morning?"
