Some years ago, one of the college students in Tor Aerie designed a "Tope
Ten Events in the Middle Ages, (plus Two)" class.

gave a series of short talks at the baronial meetings, introducing
important technological advances, one century at a time. All I remember
is the 11th Century's big three inventions:
*) The stirrup (allowing the full force of a horse behind a spear)
*) The astrolabe (opening up water beyond the sight of land)
on the Top Ten Plus Two list, and name an important technological advance.
