failed, American resources were exploited up through Columbus's "discovery"
by Scandinavians and English fishermen but everyone just thought it was
just [art of an outlying island chain and not a new continent. especially
important when you consider Columbus's sojourn in Iceland where he
apparently received rutters and sailed south to avoid those inconvenience
islands
2) The mini-Ice Age, which disrupted not merely exploration but changed
economic patterns in Europe.
Narrowing things down to a single technological innovation is impossible;
the best I can do is to list three:
The discovery of eye glasses in the 12th century
The discovery of gunpowder in the 13th century
The development of movable type in the 16th century
