Yeah, I was thinking of Luther's German translation, myself. Not only
did it have obvious and huge ramifications for the reformation, but it
also set an important foundation for German nationalism, by
standardizing the German language (which was, as I understand it, more
of a group of dialectical sublanguages, prior to that). Now that I'm
undertaking to translate some 16th century German texts, I'm amazed at
how standardized the spelling and grammar is, and how little its'
changed in 450 years...
The other event that sticks in my mind is Charlemagne's
self-coronation.
Which makes me think that maybe I've got a thing for the relationship
between the power of the church and the power of the state... :)
As for technologies, I'm all about the printing press...
