I had to stop getting digest mode - which I still would actually prefer
  - because I couldn't stand getting all the HTML garbage. I even spent
a lot of time getting accounts on different free e-mail services to see
how they did plain text so I could coach people, off list, in how to
set their e-mails to plain text. When people would post in html, I'd
send them a private message explaining the problem and give directions
on how they could turn it off. It became not worth my time because most
people who post in html were just not interested in making it easier
for the rest of if us.

So, yeah, I'd say it's a real problem.
