I would like to take a moment to thank Sir Gunther,
Duke Olaf, Duke Anton and all the SCA fighters I have
known for the past several years. When you taught me
SCA combat over the last decade and a half, you saved
me from a dog attack today.

I currently read meters for the electric company here
in Louisville. Today, a dog attacked me. I was
crossing a field from one house to the next when a dog
rushed me from behind. The sound of the dog running
through the long grass was the only warning I had. I
spun into a low crouch and punch-blocked it's teeth
with my fist. Twice more the dog lunged at me and
twice more I punched it in the head. After the third
attack, the dog hesitated - I took a couple of steps
toward it and yelled. It went home. It may have been
injured. I was not.

I first learned of SCA combat when I was a much
younger man, in the marine corps stationed in
Jacksonville, NC. As I have gotten older, I have made
less and less time for the SCA and have not attended a
fighter practice in over a year. Today, I learned that
at least some of the activities of my youth were not
wasted.

Thank you again to those whose efforts over the years
kept me whole today.
