Just a comment on event for taking newbies to.

I think the best thing one can do, in figuring out what event to use as an introduction to SCA for new people, is to find one with Things They Can Do. If you already know that they're interested in one particular activity, like dance, then they will have fun at a dance event. If they don't have something in particular, you need an inclusive event with everything, like Baron War, so they can try many things and aren't stuck with something they end up not liking.

Do, do, do, though... that's the key for most people. It is a rare person who finds just sitting around and listening to unfamiliar stuff going on around them interesting. They need a connection to the unfamiliar stuff, be it knowing the people, the culture, or whatever. That's why business meetings and court are generally poor choices for a first SCA experience.
