The only way for low income families that cannot afford cable to get quality childrens' programming is through PBS stations, which are on "free" tv. When it's a choice between food or heat and cable, guess which wins out.

Sesame Street helped me learn my alphabet, to read, know my numbers and accept people who are different from me. When the actor who used to play Mr. Hooper died, I cried. I was already an adult. From Mr. Rogers I learned about kindness, goodness and truth. I loved the Kingdom of Make-Believe and Trolley. As I got older, The Electric Company and Zoom taught me things, too. Would I have learned these things without PBS shows? I'm sure I would have, but maybe not as young and not as well.

And what about Jim Henson? If he didn't get his silly little green sock puppet frog on Sesame Street, we would never have had the Muppet Show, muppet movies, Fozzie, Gonzo opr Miss Piggy. Yoda would not have happened because there wouldn't have been anyone to be his voice or know how to operate him.

This past fall, two of our sixth grade Social Studies classes went and put on radio plays on Tough Talk on Prejudice. They plays were ones they wrote, cast and directed entirely themselves. My 12 year old autistic student did this along with the rest of his non-disabled peers. He was fantastic and discovered that he has a talent for acting and is now thinking about taking acting classes at the park district and a possible career in theatre.

So, will I sign this petition and fight to keep NPR and PBS afloat and providing educational services and opportunities to those who would otherwise not have them? I darn well will! Do it for Kermit.
