This here's the Midwest. We're a rather talky bunch at times, and that
includes off-topic matters from time to time. (Kinda reminds me, at times,
of a good old fashioned, Midwestern Sunday morning after church coffee
hour!) However, in light of how much of its programming serves SCA
interests, I think it highly relevant that we just had a lengthy discussion
on the merits of saving PBS, as well as NPR radio.
So I don't think we strayed as off-topic as you might think. OK, the
discussion on Muppets and husband's television viewing habits and such the
like may have been just a bit way too off-topic, but this sort of thing
happens from time to time. I think keeping an open and flexible mentality
will serve one well in this Kingdom.
I always find it amusing when someone moves here from out-of-Kingdom. The
first complaint we always get is, "Well, where I come from, we don't do it
like that! You guys have it all wrong!" I suppose that when Midrealmers
relocate to new Kingdoms, their reaction is pretty much identical as well.
Given that different parts of the country tend to have cultural differences
as deep as any country in the world, it's no big surprise that when someone
moves here from out-of-Kingdom, they're a bit taken aback by the
Middlebridge and how off-topic chatty it can get on those rare occasions
when such a thing happens.
Maybe other Kingdom lists aren't like ours. That's probably a good thing.
Variety is the spice of life, and in the Midrealm, well, we kind of have our
own way of doing things. It's going to take some adjustment, coming from
Atlantia, but in time, I think you'll find us to be an OK bunch. And I think
it's OK to ramble off-topic once in a while. It's very human. Sometimes, a
topic comes up that, well, just demands a bit of conversation. After all,
there are times when the Bridge is dead, dead, dead. And other times when
it's non-stop talk and I download umpty messages.
Fortunately, we generally have a fairly low signal-to-noise ratio. Unlike
another list I am on, where I finally had to specify no e-mail and web
reading only. Several hundred messages a day, mostly just people yakking
about absolutely nothing, or 50 "me, too" e-mails to someone's post was just
too much. And when I switched to digest format, I was getting between 3 and
5 digests a day. It was clogging my inbox to where I just had to give up and
be a web-only reader just to save inbox space for legitimate SCA e-mail.
So consider yourself lucky. You just caught us at a time when a very crucial
mundane issue came to the fore. PBS and NPR just happen to be very near, and
very dear, to many SCAdians hearts. I don't think it's as off-topic as you
think, though.
OK, I've prattled on long enough now......
