I need to respond to this too.... My husband went into the Air Force 18 years ago. At the time he had a bachelor's in history and we had a one year old special needs son. I had given him one year after graduation to find a job in his field or go into military service. There were NO jobs to be found in his field, without a teaching degree. We would have been willing to move anywhere in the world! LOL Here we are all these years later, career military. He's added a degree in weather (his military field.)
Did he go into the military to feed his family and get health insurance? You betcha. People go into the military for all kinds of reasons. But most of the Air Force people I know have some sort of post high school education. Hardly the ignorant, unwashed masses.

>Okay, I've skipped large portions of this thread, but this one caught my eye. Fionnuala, I was neither poor nor stupid when I enlisted in the Air Force in 1976. And, in that year, few Americans, certainly none with a TV set, could claim ignorance of the brutality of war or the risks of military service. I enlisted because I regarded it then, and still do, as the obligation of a citizen to give back something to our country.

Where am I going again? And why am I in this handbasket?
