Unto the good populace of Meridies and our various neighbors: Greetings!

As Autocrat of Border Raids this year, I would like to take this opportunity
to both encourage you to attend and to give you a little information about
the upcoming event and the site where it will be held.

The schedule will be completed and on the site tonight!

As many of you are aware, we are trying a few new things for Border Raids.
There will be a feast for those who pre-registered before the cut-off as
well as lunches and breakfasts we are running as fund-raisers for various
groups and causes in the SCA. There will be travelers' fare for all who come
through the gates on Friday night. There will be plenty of classes as well
as an Arts and Sciences competition. Of course, there will be plenty - and I
mean plenty - of martial activities for those that are so inclined.

It has been a pleasure to work with the staff of the Cumberland Centre in
preparing for this event. They are a non-profit organization made up of SCA
folks who have put together a site for SCA events. Everything they make in
event fees goes back into the site. None of the directors or staff are paid
for their work on the Centre. In fact, many have contributed their own funds
for love of the game.

When I approached them about hosting Border Raids there, I met with their
directors to plan out what would be needed to make the site ready. As a
result, they have added county water to handle the large number of attendees
we hope to see. They have 12 showers (2 handicapped accessible and 2 regular
are in the hall, 4 solar showers, 4 temporary "camp shower" stalls). They
have 2 full restrooms in the hall (handicapped accessible) for each gender
plus we are getting 12 porta-johns, 2 of which will be handicapped
accessible.

The reasons for allowing event-goers to set up early for the event are 1) to
reduce traffic during the event, and 2) to recruit (we hope) a few extra
hands to help with preparations. Based on previous years' attendance numbers
and the size of the site, it is highly unlikely that Border Raids will "sell
out" (although it would be pretty amazing to try!). We do ask that large
groups contact Lady Z (housedarktree@aol.com) to reserve an area suitable to
their needs. The site is 50 acres in size: 40 acres of open fields for
camping and other activities, plus 10 acres of wooded camping. There is
plenty of room for camping!

For those of you who prefer to "camp" in your RVs, there is an RV park 10
miles from site, and another 16 miles away. We plan on providing shuttle
service to and from the nearer, if there is a need. There are many hotels
and restaurants in the area, as well. There will be bags of ice and hay
bales for sale on site as a convenience. There is a Super Wal-Mart 5 miles
away.

Finally, I would like to point to the web site for this year's Border Raids,
http://www.south-downs.org/borderraids, for a complete list of activities
and staff contact information, and to the web site for the Cumberland
Centre, http://www.cumberlandcentre.org, if you are interested in finding
out more about this really great place. If your have questions beyond what
are answered by either of these, please send me an e-mail (miramah@att.net)
or call me (770-253-0549).

Looking forward to seeing you there,

Miramah
Autocrat - South of the Border Raids 2005
