I took a train NYC-Chicago last week, and am taking one back in 2 days.

Pluses: More legroom, electric plugs available on-train, larger carryons
(you can take a 28x22 suitcase as a carryon), no need to trek out to and
from airports, no ghastly security (keep your shoes on and your suitcases
packed). Nice scenery.

Cons: Trips do take longer. Food on Amtrak is a ripoff--pack sandwiches
and drinks in your carryon and have an on-train picnic (in your case, Amtrak
will still be half as expensive even if you eat in the dining car). The
food isn't bad--in fact, it beats airline food hands-down--but it costs like
$15-25 for an entree that's worth half as much, and other prices are
comparable.

I'd recommend taking the train if prices are comparable (or trains are
cheaper) and travel time isn't a big issue.
