Greetings, Edward.
TW, like any of the martial activities, has some cost to get into, but
the cost is fairly low. At the simplest, you will need one knife and
one axe to practice with. If you have a backyard of good enough size,
then you just need a stump and can begin practicing on your own.
First off, familiarize yourself with the Midrealm TW Rules:
http://www.midrealm.org/marshal/thrownweapons/
This site contains the TW portion of the missile weapons rules, and a
link to the full manual.
I have found that having your own weapons to throw is preferable.
Axes, knives and spears are cheap to buy and/or make. Well, spears,
at least.
For axes, I like the ones sold at Panther Primitives
(http://www.pantherprimitives.com/). The axe handles are the least
expensive sold of most sites and the axe heads are durable. I have
been using the same set for over 5 years now. Handles die quickly, so
order extras. The hawk is on Page 108. The $19 model. There are
many others sources to be found with a Google search.
For knives, I like the 14" Pro Flight Thrower from Cold Steel
(http://www.ltspecpro.com/throwers.html). They are balanced and
durable. I have been throwing the same set of knives for over 5 years
now. They are currently $11 each. There are many other sources for
knives to found with a Google search.
If you want your own spear, you can either buy one of the nice ones
from Cold Steel, or make one for about $10 in parts. The parts: Rake
Handle (with metal collar) and a LARGE screw. Take the screw and
begin screwing into the rake handle. When you begin to hear the wood
crack and pop, you know you are almost tight enough. That is why you
need the metal collared version. Take a rotary tool with a cutoff
blade and cut off the end of the screw at an angle. Voila! The end
product is light and balanced.
Like an martial art, if you want to be good, you need to practice
smart and often until you can throw without thinking about it. I
leave my targets up in the backyard all summer long. When I get home
from work, if I had a stressful day, I go out and throw to release the
energy.
Come warm weather, I also host a Thrown Weapon/Archery Practice
(ThWAP) at my home for the Marche of Unicorn, but it is open to pretty
much anyone who knows about it and can find my house.
This e-mail message has already gone long, so I would end it here for
the now. I am working on a series of articles for my baronial
newsletter on how to throw each weapon. At least, how *I* throw. I
have one a few tournaments, so I know the techniques work.
