Aonghus,

With respect, the problem you are havingwith the norse hawks may be you. I say may, because I do not throw axesyet but I have been throwing knives for 30 years now, and after many years ofpractice you get to the point where you can stick pretty much anything with apoint. One of my stupid-human-tricks is to collect up a selection ofpointy things in the office and bet the new Marine that I can stick them allinto a box or cork board with one throw each. To date I have managed toput pencils, pens, a compass, screwdrivers, a piece of broken glass, a largesliver of a wooden tent stake, a rifle cleaning rod, and even a straightenedpaperclip into a target. The better balanced the axe, the easier it willbe for a beginner to throw and get good with. So if you are new to thesport then by all means get the best you can manage. I also recommendmarking off the distance you plan to throw, from the handbook, and test all ofyour new purchases from that distance as distance, weight,
and speed of throware as important as balance of the weapon. After some time throwing, youwill learn to find the “sweet spot” of any weapon and learn how tohold it to get it on target. Oddly, I havent had the opportunity to doany thrown weapons in SCA yet! One more thing on my very LONG list ofthings to explore and enjoy when I retire from the Marine Corps and move backto the Cleftlands after 20 years. Good luck to you,

Caedmon,

I've also toyed with the idea of starting thrown weapons aswell. A couple or three questions.

What do you use or what can be used as a cheap, durabletarget...no stumps in my yard :( Do I need to go chopping down trees andfashion my own stump or are there alternatives?

Have you thrown the Cold Steel Norse Hawks? What doyou think about them? I have toyed with throwing the ones I own and can'tquite get the hang of it...is it me (quite probably) or are these hawks notbalanced well? Practice more or buy some new axes?

Finally, have you made any spears using SKS spike bayonetsand rake handles? I read an article on the internet about making athrowing spear similar to what you've described, but replacing the screw with aspike bayonet and purchased three of them for about $3 / each at the last gunshow I attended. Have you thrown one of these? I'm going to make afew spears using them and I'll post the results.
