Assets are the part of  a suit of armor.

Tassets hang from the front, at the waist.  Assets protect the backside.

But what do they mean by "assets"? Things all of us personally own like fighting/fencing/archery kits, Pennsic equipment, garb, etc.? If that's the case, then some groups could end up owing thousands of dollars.

Let's just say for the sake of argument that these "assets" include trailers and their contents that groups store at Pennsic - do those count? What about things that groups own like feast equipment (pots, pans, utensils, tablecloths, server tabards, etc.)? What about Baronies who have Baronial regalia - does that count?

This could get mighty complicated if they want 18% of "assets" as opposed to 18% of every $100 in a group's bank account. Still, this could be a death knell for smaller or newer SCA groups that lack substantial funds, or older groups going through a "down cycle" like what happens on occasion. I see plenty of fundraisers ahead on the horizon for groups who end up having to pay large shares of their finances in order to meet their obligation.

Saradwen, the BoD is asking for 18 percent of assets, not income.

Not to ruffle feathers but I'm trying to understand.  $18 dollars out of every $100 is the difference between existing or not?

My concern, upon hearing this news, was also for the smaller groups with less ability to pay 18% of their income toward the settlement. For some groups, that amount could be the difference between life and death of a small group with very little in the way is monetary assets.

Our group will be able to manage this, fortunately, but in the nearly 35 years I have been a member of my shire, we have seen our share of financial up and down cycles, and there were times in our past where having to come up with that kind of cash could quite literally have killed our group.

Fortunately we have, in our shire's long history, weathered many storms, up and down cycles of members and activity and come out the other side stronger, as I believe our Society will with this proverbial brick thrown through our collective window.
