"Officer serves as the "president" of the group. They act as group administrator and legal representative of the SCA."

Unto the most noble region of the Midlands do I send greetings and salutations!

It's official. Dame Marie has finally taken off her golden key and is relaxing on the white snow beaches of Rokkehealden with a mug of mead and a bit of ice dabbed on her nose. There is no question that she has earned her repose, and I know you all join me in singing her praises for all that she did over the last two years. This leaves me, your most humble servant, at your beck and call for the next two.

I am lucky to say that I already know most of you. For those who do not know me, however, I'd like to introduce myself. I joined the SCA while I was in college in the early '90s in Calontir. I then had a packet of kids, which kept me away for a decade or more. I came back once the kids were either old enough to join in, or to stay home if they weren't interested, and have been heavily involved ever since. I spent several years as the Seneschal of Wurmwald, have run many Festival of Maidens, two Kingdom events (Crown Tourney and RUM), and generally can't seem to not be involved in helping when and how I can.

My goal over the next two years is to try to find workable solutions to some of our most vexing problems: recruitment, officer turnovers, and general group malaise. To this end, I'd like to set up several Round Tables where our members can talk freely about what's working, what's not working, and how others are dealing with some similar issues. The more people who join in, the better the information will be for everyone, so I encourage you to seek these opportunities out at events that you attend.

Something of note, we now have a new Calendar Deputy to the Midlands Regional Seneschal. Mistress Sarafina Sinclair has volunteered to keep a regional calendar in order to facilitate Midlands event planning. While the Kingdom already has a calendar keeper, we've found numerous instances where regional events overlapped. Most of the time, it was due to checking the kingdom calendar, seeing a free weekend, and planning accordingly, only to find out that another Midlands group had done the same. The Midlands Calendar Deputy will allow groups to "pencil in" dates, something that the Kingdom Calendar Secretary doesn't allow. This will give groups an opportunity to see what weekends are being considered for which events. They can then decide if they'd like to go ahead and go forward with their planning, or if they'd like to look at other weekends, instead. We'll be setting this up by the start of the new year.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact either myself or Mistress Sarafina. If anyone has any questions or concerns about anything, I hope that you will find me as easy to talk to as Marie was. I look forward to getting to know everyone better over the coming months and years.

Yours in eternal service to Crown and Kingdom,
