MK MoY Letters to the PALE

November 2006

Greetings unto the Noble People of the Midrealm from your Kingdom Minister of Youth,

Everyday the Midrealm Page School grows. We have almost tripled our student body since last September. It is all because the youth of our Kingdom have had the support of dedicated parents, instructors, and Kingdom leaders. I am very proud of all of you!

Over the last several months I have received emails requesting information about starting both the Midrealm Page School and the Page for a Day program in local groups. The Page for a Day program information is located on the Midrealm Minister of Youth Page. There you will find everything you need to run the Page for a Day program. Students that participate in the Page for a Day program can earn credits toward the Service Hours. The Midrealm Page School information is also available on the Midrealm Minister of Youth Page. However, I have also created a list of information and helpful hints that I hope will make it easier for MOYs, instructors, parents, and students to utilize the Midrealm Page School (PS) program in their local groups.

The Paperwork

  1. MOY’s/Instructors/Parents/Students - Read the PS charter.
  2. Students/Parents - Fill out the PS Enrollment Form. This form needs to be given to the PS Registrar. Once the student is registered we will make arrangements for delivery of a PS baldric.
  3. Students/Parents - Take a PS Activity Accreditation form with you when you attend A&S and martial arts classes (classroom or private); work as event staff, or as a Page. These forms must be completed by instructors, mentors, and employers. The student/parent is responsible for turning in these forms to the PS Registrar.
  4. Students/Parents - Keep copies of all of your paperwork. You can ether keep the hardcopies or you can also scan in your documents and store then in a folder on your computer, on a disk, or another preferred storage method.
  5. Students/Parents/Instructors/MOYs - Keep blank Activity Accreditation forms on hand.
  6. Instructors - Have a sign in sheet for the youth that attend your classes. If you fill out a PS Activity Accreditation form for any of the students on your list please make note of it and send an email to the PS Registrar.
  7. MOYs/Instructors/Parents/Students - Merit badges will be distributed by the PS staff once a student has completed the required credit hours within each level.
  8. Parents/Students - Please keep in contact with the PS staff. If you notice a discrepancy in earned credit hours please notify us right away.
  9. Parents/Students - Once a student has completed the required credit hours for a level he/she will be elevated as soon as possible. A student is still eligible to earn credits for their next level even if he/she is not elevated immediately after completing his/her required credit hours.
  10. Parents/Students - Elevations usually take place during Royal Courts. The PS staff does what they can to accommodate students in the different regions. We will contact student/parents concerning possible elevation dates. When responding please give us a list all of the events the student will be attending. We will select the elevation date based on the event most convenient for the majority of students. If needed, we will do our best to hold separate elevations in order to accommodate as many regions as possible.
  11. MOYs/Instructors/Parents/Students - All forms should be given to our Page School Registrar, Lady Katerina Mahler. They can be sent via email (you can scan in your completed forms), USPS, or hand delivered. Lady Kat’s contact information is in the Pale as well as the MKOY webpage.

The Curriculum

  1. Service Hours - A few examples would be teaching classes, working in a kitchen, being a runner for an A&S Competition, serving at feast, being part of a set-up or clean-up crew, working with heralds and marshals, helping at the list table, service to a person (for example Royalty, the autocrat, troll, Page for a Day*) at an event. *Page for a Day is a program that assists Pages with finding employment and helps those in need of assistance to find Pages.
  2. Arts and Sciences Hours - A few examples would be creating A&S projects and entering them in an A&S competition or faire, performing arts (instrumental/vocal/acting/etc.), attending A&S classes on period subjects (hands-on and/or research oriented). Classes do not have to be at an event. These classes can be at a local meeting, or at home with a parent or a mentor.
  3. Chivalry Hours - A few examples would be learning or participating in the martial arts and researching and/or attending classes about military history, tactics, and other related martial/military subjects. Credits will be given for each new martial art learned. (Example: heavy, rapier, thrown weapons, equestrian, archery) These subjects will be broken down further by fighting styles/weapons/culture (Example: sword and shield, pole arm, great sword, Florentine, etc.).

The Midrealm Page School Charter and all Page School and Page for a Day forms can be found on the Midrealm Minister of Youth web page: http://www.midrealm.org/mkyouth/
