MK MoY Letters to the PALE

January 2008

Greetings to all who hold our youth dear:

As the winds of winter wrap our houses and keep us indoors, we turn to the practice and execution of our favorite arts and sciences activities. Be it dance, music, combat, food preparation, the domestic arts or the technological sciences, stop to consider how your favorite activity can be shared with a child.

Winter events frequently include youth boffer activities. Go to one for the good fun and good exercise it provides for your child. Dancing at events can be fun and exercise as well. Ask the dance master or mistress which dances use a simple repetitive step pattern and teach your young one.

If you or someone you know participates in the arts and sciences, or makes any type of medieval “stuff”, consider how that may be adapted for children. Some advance prep work, simplifying the designs, or making parts bigger or smaller to fit the needs of smaller hands are all methods you can use to give children a chance to do it like the big people.

If you have a particular skill you could modify a bit and provide an activity for children, consider teaching it. Many events welcome classes for youth, as well as RUM’s youth track. Your commitment can be as little as an hour. Plan well, make it activity oriented, have the kids create something to take with them and most important, keep it simple!

If you would like to start planning a youth activity and would like assistance to get started, please contact me. I would love to help.

Yours in service to our youth
Anthoinette
