What is the SCA?
The Society for Creative Anachronism, or SCA, is an international organization dedicated to researching and re-creating the arts, skills and traditions of pre-17th century Europe (and cultures that came into contact with Europe).  Founded in 1966 in California, the SCA has been around for a while and IS NOT LARPing, there is no magic, no Dwarves or Dark Elves and combat is made as real as possible while maintaining safety.

Members of the SCA study and take part in a variety of activities, including combat, archery, equestrian activities, costuming, cooking, metalwork, woodworking, music, dance, calligraphy, fiber arts and much more.  If it was done in the Middle Ages or Renaissance, odds are you'll find someone in the SCA interested in recreating it.

For more information on the SCA please visit the SCA official website

The SCA is the parent organization of the shire, the kingdom and the Known World.  Go HERE to officially join the SCA...which you won't have to do right away. Membership in the SCA does allow for voting in the shire, holding office and fighting.  There is a non-member charge at most events but membership is NOT required to get into events.

How do I get involved with the Shire or the SCA?

  1. do a little research on line to see if it is something that you are interested in there are many sites and you tube videos focusing on the society (just type in SCA into www.youtube.com)
  2.  visit us at a meeting.
    1. The Shire of Okenshield has a monthly archery and Arts and science meeting
    2. The Heavy Combat fight practices are usually on Sundays at 2:00 at Levi Jackson start park in London Kentucky
    3. Visit our Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/okenshield/
    4. contact one of our officers (see the page of offices)
  3. Talk to some of our members while at the meeting

What can I do in the SCA?

you can learn a new skill, participate in heavy (armored) combat, participate in rapier combat, thrown weapons, target archery, combat archery, equestrian skills and more.

If you want to fight in heavy combat you can show up to a fight practice and learn the safety procedures and slowly start to participate.  Do not worry about buying or making armor right away, the shire has armor you can borrow.

If you want to focus on learning a new skill then you can show up to a monthly meeting or attend an event and take classes.
