Here is the portion of Midrealm law which set forth the creation of the Red Company:

The Order of the Red Company

XVII-1301
There shall exist in the Middle Kingdom an Order unto which the Crown may elect such persons as it sees fit. The award shall be called the Order of the Red Company, hereafter referred to as the Order.

The Order shall be given to individuals who, in the sight of the Crown, have shown proficiency and leadership in melee and/or tournament combat.

(Previous wording: XVII-1302
The Order shall be given to individuals who, in the sight of the Crown, have shown excellence and leadership in melée and/or tournament combat, and who have trained others in these skills.

XVII-1303
Holders of the Order shall be entitled to place after their names the initials C.R.C., and may be styled and announced in precedence as Companions of the Order of the Red Company. Those holders of the Order who have not been elevated to the Chivalry may also be styled and announced as Sergeants of the Red Company.

XVII-1304
The Order shall confer upon the holder an Award of Arms if that individual is not already armigerous.

XVII-1305 (This is obsolete, but the on-line law is incorrect for this)
Membership in the Order shall assure an individual a position, according to seniority in the Order, in the Order of Precedence, co-equal with Companions of the Order of the Willow and the Order of the Silver Oak, but after Companions of the Order of the Dragon's Heart.

Elevation shall be proclaimed in court or in some other public place to the Middle Kingdom at large.

Membership in the Order may be terminated only by the resignation of a Companion from the Order, submitted to the Crown in writing.

Companions of the Order may wear a medallion bearing the badge emblazoned gules, two flanged maces in saltire argent.
