10 am Advanced Embroidery Technique # 37

How to alter modern embroidery patterns into the three dimensional form of the 16th century known as stump work.
Stump work raises the embroidery gives the work texture. I have several examples that I will bring to share and it is to be more of a time of learning about a "new" old method of embroidery. Students may bring embroidery patterns that they would like to make 3D and the class will discuss various methods as there are several ways to do this effect.
Cost is $3 for printing of handouts.

Elayne Thorne is a 14th century lady married to an archer. Her hobbies are embroidery, reading, drawing and travelling. She is always trying different types of embroidery and is quite inventive. Mundanely, Elaine Hecathornis a Second grade teacher at an inner-city school in Peoria, IL. She does enjoy travelling, reading and is a scribe for our Barony. I first started to embroider when I was four years old and my mother would thread my needle for me.
11 am Early Rus' Dress: Novgorodian Clothing

An overview of the male and female (and hopefully children's) dress of all classes during the Novgorod period in Russia, 10th through 14th century.
Pomestnitsa Yana Barsova studies the domestic arts of Medieval Russia when she is not wrangling the Slavic Interest Group email discussion list.
Master Mordak Timofeyvich Rostovskogo is an itenerant teacher wandering the roads of the Known World in search of willing students, generous hearths and good cheer.

A survey of the popular hat styles worn throughout the 16th century in England. This course examines the evolution of styles throughout the Tudor monarchy.
4 pm A Pictorial Overview of Beadwork in Period

10 am How to: Medieval German Bead Embroidery

Class kits $5. B/W Handouts $2, if kept (is available online and in color at www.medievalbeads.com). Hands on class with kits for an entire project. Everything you need to make a beaded patch to sew onto a favor or your garb. NOTE: People with nearsighted vision problems, or have difficulty doing very detailed handy work will want to bring magnifiers or pursue other classes. Beads and bead needles are TINY. Limited to 10 people.

This class will include a discussion of the methods used to facet gemstones and the evolution of pre-17th century gem cuts, an examination of replicas cut by the instructor, and a hands-on demonstration of gem cutting.
2 pm 4 Mead Sources from the 14th Century

Discusses four sources of mead recipes from the 14th C., from England, France, & Germany. May include tastings of meads made from the recipes. (Tasting depends on if site is dry or not... )
3 pm Writing a Research Paper Part 1

Part 1 will teach the mechanics of taking notes and constructing an outline
4 pm Writing a Research Paper --- Part 2
Eithne ni Cheallaigh
We will discuss internal citation versus endnotes and footnotes and the use of writer's manuals in constructing citations and bibliographies. Both will include bibliographic handouts. There is no materials fee for these classes.
THL Eithne ni Cheallaigh ThirChonaill is a 6th century Irishwoman, the daughter of a Dalaigh (counselor of law) of the Brehon Courts, although she often time travels to 16th century Italy. In the 6th century she would just call herself by her first name and recite her lineage when it really mattered.

10 am Papermaking

A hands on class which gets a bit messy. Starting off with a lecture and demonstration, each student will be making a sheet of European style cotton rag paper. Part two (after lunch at a time to be determined) will be taking the paper out of the press.
11 am Ikebana --- The Art of Japanese Floral Arranging

A hands-on class that includes the history of Ikebana and the making of a small arrangement.
Limited to 10- class fee $5.00
1 pm Beginning Tablet Weaving

This class will take you from the warped cards to a good solid start on a project. This class combined with the previous class will take students from no exposure at all to a healthy understanding of how tablet weaving works, and enough experience to feel reasonably comfortable finishing their first project and planning their second.
Fiadnata has been an active tablet-weaver for 10 years, many of them spent teaching tablet-weaving at Pennsic, as well as hosting the Tablet Weavers Tea there. She is an active supporter of the Arts & Sciences, and can be found teaching and judging at many A&S Faires around the Kingdom. (Mundanely, she is an academic reference librarian, and is always willing to help someone with documentation and research.)

3 pm Beginning Glass Bead making - A Hands-On Class

This class is being taught by a newcomer to the bead making scene but one who is very enthusiastic about it. Bead making can be very fun, enriching and addicting! Come out to this class there will be some lecture on the history of lampworking and modern aspects of bead making but mostly we will be making beads. Hopefully everyone will be able to walk away with at least one bead that they have made themselves. Class attendees should wear natural fiber clothing and if they have long hair please bring a tie back for it.
Cost: $2 to cover costs of materials and gas.
Limit to 9 people (adults only, please).
