10 am The Fight of George Silver
Baron AElfred of Chester, OP
[2 hours]
George Silver was an Elizabethan gentleman who in 1599 published "Paradoxes of Defence," in which he decried the fad in England of training with and using rapiers. Silver advocated instead the use of traditional English weapons such as the short sword and buckler. Silver then set out to explain his methods of swordplay in "Brief Instructions Upon My Paradoxes of Defence," which was not printed until it was discovered in a draft form in the British Museum and published in 1898. In "Brief Instructions," Silver lays out simple methods of use of a number of different weapons including short sword, short staff, Morris pike and Forest bill. This class will focus on use of the short sword and adjunct weapons such as buckler and dagger.
Class Type: Hands on
Equipment Needed: Required - Sidesword or single hand rattan sword and gloves. Suggested - Vambraces and elbow protection; buckler and dagger for sidesword or armored combat.
