10 am Playing Live Dance Music

Practical advice for musicians who wish to play live dance music at events, or individuals who wish to organize a live dance band (either ahead of time or at the event itself). We will try to play some user-friendly arrangements of popular dance tunes if musicians show up with their instruments!
11 am Inns at Court (Easy Period English Dance)

Period Elizabethan dance for beginners and experienced dancers alike
1 pm Beg Your Pardon, Master Arbeau?
Lord Galeran Chanterel
A reconstruction class with some dancing, looking at differences between Arbeau's dances as written and as commonly danced in the SCA. Working from translations of the source with the dance names removed, the class would determine which common dance is being described and then attempt to dance it as written.

Description: A fun dance from Cesare Negri's Le Gratie d'Amore, 1602 celebrating the bizarreness of love.

10 am Introduction to Anglo-Saxon Lyre
Mistress Isolde de la Ramée
Includes an overview of the archaeological and manuscript descriptions of the lyre and a brief explanation of Anglo-Saxon poetry. After a discussion of the evidence for a method of performance, a demonstration of such a performance will be given.

An overview of Western European music from the 12th-16th centuries. Attendees will hear recorded examples of music from different periods and genres and learn about some of the defining characteristics of each. This class is for both musicians and non-musicians.
3 pm The Ballad as a Musical Tradition

An exploration of the Ballad as a musical experience. Discussion of structure, conventions, language & source material. Limited handouts available.

No matter what kind of performing art you do, the street was a venue your persona would have been familiar with. This class will delve into the nuts and bolts of how to perform on modern streets with an eye to adapting that to the SCA, thus making your performance and the experience of your fellow SCAdians more authentic.

2 pm Introduction to Conjuring
Kuji Kaoni Musashi
The performance of magic, presented for the beginner. Three classic feats of sleight of hand will be taught, using coins, ropes, and cards. You will learn the conjuring theory necessary to take a cheap, cheesy trick and transform it into a true piece of magic which will dazzle and mystify your audience. This class was developed by Matthew Christopher of Coxcomb Academy.
