The Astrolabe

Master Johannes von Narrenstein The astrolabe is a medieval analog computer. Its parts will be discussed and three of its uses will be demonstrated, relying on Chaucer's text 'Treatise on the Astrolabe.'

Take-home sheets will allow participants to construct their own astrolabes at home.

Baroness Catriona nicHugh Mclaey The Medieval year revolved around foods that could or could not be eaten due to holy day customs. The class will look at how the calendar was written and some of the restrictions cooks dealt with in relationship to the calendar, both agricultural and ecclesiastical.

Basic Heraldic Design

Lord Damian Nihthauk The rules and practices involved in the design of a heraldic device are explained using the mnemonic BASIC. The intent is to provide a non herald with simple tools to assist them in designing their personal heraldic device. The class includes a handout that explains these BASIC rules in simple terms.

Heraldic Flags & Banners

Lord Damian Nihthauk Different types of flags and banners used to display personal and group heraldry will be discussed. Examples of a variety of flags and banners will be available to be inspected. Emphasis of the class is how to design a "period style" display using modern material and techniques. The class includes a handout on the history of heraldic flags and banners and their design and construction.
